My design for a United 757 plane is people, all of us, joined by one thread, a line that creates many people and unites everyone… to represent each of our varied experiences, ideas and outlooks.
My block print “Connected” has the same purpose.
I truly appreciated United’s dedication to provide this opportunity for women through their contest.
#HerArtHere it was a chance to inspire respect and unity.
At first, I thought several colors might help to make my point but since the guidelines called for a small number of very specific colors, I created my design with just two core colors. United Blue was used for the logo fill and Rhapsody Blue for the connected line, to make it more clear that we are joined together as part of a whole.
People inspire me. Freedom inspires me; freedom to express, create and uplift others.
It is my hope that every person can see themselves somewhere in the continuum, worthy of a chance.
We are taught there are 7 continents so there are 7 faces, however, each figure represents what the viewer sees, whether it be their gender, age or ethnicity. I am from New Jersey, I was born there, and feel fortunate to be less than an hour from New York City (which has access to the world through the people and art) and Philadelphia … as well as the Atlantic ocean, Pocono mountains and 1000’s of acres of farmland.
After working on this project for a while, I realized people on both coasts are fortunate to have a mix of many cultures, extraordinary cities and treasured beaches, providing access for many. This design opportunity was for women and personally, I needed a chance to connect with the world as an audience.
Women need opportunities for representation in the arts, their contributions matter. Art can join us all, introduce possibilities and stir emotion for any age, race, ethnicity or religion. By providing representation for a woman artist, United provided global exposure to a woman’s perspective. Art builds communities and helps people to understand others as well as themselves.
If I could create full time, that is what I would do. I hope my art can stir thoughts and ideas or emotions and I realize success when I create something that brings others happiness or peace.
